A lot of excitement and euphoria has been created with the launch of the 2nd edition of the millennium marathon 2016 regional races which kicked off in the Northern and Upper West Regions on Saturday 19th March. With this year’s marathon slogan “A race for health and Peace” momentum for the rest of the regional races is set as the first race has produced a new national record set in the Upper West regional race. With the race starting at 6:25am, close to a 1000 runners particiated in the regional run. Iddrisu Adams from the Ghana Revenue Authority in the Upper West Region broke the National 10.5k record set in 2015 by completing the 10.5k race in an impressive 29:30 sec min. The previous record was 30minutes. Iddrisu also broke his own personal record set last year at 31:00 minutes. Solomon Coffie of the Prisons Service came second finsihing in 30:38 minutes whiles the thrid pace was taken by John Domabekpulo of Ullo S.H.H.S. in 31:05 minutes.
For their prize, the winners for both male and female categories received cash prizes, Awango Solar Products from Total Ghana and water from Melcom.Prizes were given to the first 10 in both male and female categories. The Millennium Marathon is this year instituting a professional Athlete's programme for the Millennium Marathon race on September 3rd. The Millennium Marathonis an IAAF certified race and all elite athletes who wish to participate for the prize money will have to be registered into the programme. Winners of the regional marathon will receive an automatic qualification into the programme that will seed athletes according to their marathon portfolio and performance.
